Dear Vice President Harris, Governor Walz, and Members of the Media,
As a concerned citizen, we are compelled to address a disturbing trend in today’s political and media rhetoric. Words have power, and comparisons to the Holocaust, as well as references to Nazis or Hitler, carry a unique and solemn weight given the immense suffering and historical trauma endured, particularly by the Jewish community.
It is with deep respect for history and those who suffered that we urge you to consider the profound implications of using these comparisons where there is no legitimate basis. Such rhetoric trivializes the horrific atrocities of the past, dishonoring the memories of countless individuals and families who experienced unspeakable loss. The following letter explains why this language is both harmful and disrespectful, and why it has no place in public discourse.
Thank you for your consideration.
We appreciate any genuine efforts toward moderation in political speech. However, we strongly believe that greater care and responsibility are needed to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that invokes one of the darkest chapters of human history without genuine relevance. Using Nazi comparisons or labeling individuals as “Nazis” or “Hitler” in cases with absolutely no legitimate resemblance is not only profoundly disrespectful but also abhorrent, particularly to the Jewish community and to all who suffered the horrors of the Holocaust.
When people irresponsibly equate others with Nazis, they are not making a factual or reasonable comparison. Instead, they exploit historical trauma marked by genocide, oppression, and unimaginable loss, wielding it as a political weapon to shock, mislead, or damage reputations. Such comparisons reduce the depth of WWII atrocities to a mere insult, erasing the true significance of Nazi crimes and dishonoring the memory of millions who perished. This misuse also distorts history, feeding a cycle of misinformation that numbs society to the severity of actual Nazi atrocities.
Furthermore, the act of displaying Nazi symbols or footage in these contexts crosses moral boundaries, reawakening pain for those who have personal or cultural ties to this tragic history. It reflects a failure to respect the suffering endured by countless families. When historical symbols of raw evil are used inappropriately, they fuel resentment, trivialize the Holocaust’s true gravity, and risk normalizing symbols that should remain universally condemned.
Regrettably, we find that our Vice President and her running mate, along with our current president and much of the media—MSNBC in particular—have disrespected us all through grotesque and invalid comparisons to Hitler and Nazi ideology. Such rhetoric, especially when unsubstantiated, divides us, cheapens public discourse, and undermines the responsibility of leadership to represent truth and integrity.
In memory of those who suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime and out of respect for historical truth, we implore you and others in positions of influence to refrain from invoking Nazi comparisons without just cause. This restraint is not only a matter of respect for history but also a necessary step toward a more honest and compassionate discourse in our society.
Sincerely, with pride and love of America,
(12th and 13th American descendants)
